## Who they are

Jacek hovers over the story as a name that darkens every conversation about the Horeszko castle and the Soplica claim to it. His brother the Judge barely knew him; the priest Robak speaks of him with strange, intimate urgency, urging reconciliation and the return of confiscated lands. A vow to restore Sophia to her inheritance and to unite the feuding houses through Thaddeus drives the moral machinery of the early plot, even as Jacek himself stays offstage.
