> Toribio Rodriguez Vallejo in Pablo de Segovia, the Spanish Sharper by Francisco de Quevedo.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Don Toribio, Don Toribio Rodriguez Vallejo Gomez de Ampuero y Jordan, poor Don Toribio

**First appearance:** 0010-viii

## Snapshot

A threadbare hidalgo of endless titles and empty pockets, Don Toribio teaches Pablo the fine art of starving with style.

## Who they are

Proud of a lineage longer than his ledger, Don Toribio survives Madrid's underworld by borrowing, bluffing, and never admitting hunger. He adopts Pablo as a fellow gentleman of misfortune, and together they navigate the shabby economy of appearances. His comic dignity — all ceremony, no supper — embodies the novel's sharpest joke: that honor without money is simply a more elegant way to starve.
