## Snapshot

Spain's mordant satirist and the novel's author, who steps into his own frame to hear Pablo's life story and set it down.

## Who they are

A prodigy of the Golden Age — poet, theologian, pamphleteer, and scourge of folly — Quevedo meets the reformed sharper Pablo on the road and becomes his listener and scribe. Disappointed ambition and a Swift-like taste for anti-humanity drive his satire, yet he lends Pablo's voice its own dignity. His presence turns the memoir into a conversation about who deserves to be remembered and why rogues make honest mirrors.
