# Dorothy Gale — Ozma of Oz character guide > Dorothy Gale in Ozma of Oz by L. Frank Baum. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Dorothy, little Dorothy, So Dorothy, XIV Dorothy, the Tin Woodman Dorothy **First appearance:** 0003-i-the-girl-in-the-chicken-coop ## Snapshot A Kansas girl bound for Australia until a storm at sea pitches her into fairyland, where she must outwit a tyrant to get home. ## Who they are Dorothy Gale is the child every Oz book is written toward — the one readers beg Mr. Baum to bring back — and here she washes up in Ev with nothing but her wits, a dinner-pail, and a talking hen. Her plain Kansas practicality is her real magic: she takes talking machines and headless princesses in stride, and her longing to get home keeps the strange journey grounded. She is the reader's eyes in a country where nothing behaves, and the reason Ozma's rescue mission becomes personal. ## Relationships ### [Ozma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/ozma) _friendship_ Dorothy and Ozma are close friends and allies, with Ozma often guiding and protecting Dorothy during her adventures. ### [Billina](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/billina) _friendship_ Billina, a talking hen, is Dorothy's loyal companion and witty sidekick throughout the journey. ### [Nome King](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/nome_king) _rivalry_ Dorothy directly opposes the Nome King's plans, often outsmarting him and thwarting his evil schemes. ### [Scarecrow](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/scarecrow) _friendship_ Dorothy and the Scarecrow share a warm, enduring friendship, with the Scarecrow offering wisdom and support. ### [Uncle Henry](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/uncle_henry) _family_ Uncle Henry is Dorothy's loving guardian and family member, though he is mostly absent from her Oz adventures. ### [Princess Langwidere](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/princess_langwidere) _rivalry_ Dorothy clashes with the vain Princess Langwidere, who tries to steal Dorothy's head for her collection. ### [Queen of Ev](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/queen_of_ev) _friendship_ Dorothy sympathizes with the Queen of Ev and helps rescue her and her family from captivity. ### [Wheelers](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/wheelers) _rivalry_ The Wheelers are hostile, chattering creatures who harass Dorothy and her companions during their journey. ### [Cowardly Lion](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/cowardly_lion) _friendship_ The Cowardly Lion is Dorothy's loyal friend and protector, despite his own fears. ### [Hungry Tiger](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/hungry_tiger) _friendship_ The Hungry Tiger, despite his appetite, is a gentle friend to Dorothy and part of her traveling group. ### [Billina](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/billina) _friendship_ Billina, a talking hen, is Dorothy's loyal companion and witty sidekick throughout the journey. ### [Ozma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/characters/ozma) _friendship_ Dorothy and Ozma are close friends and allies, with Ozma often guiding and protecting Dorothy during her adventures. ## In the story ### [Dedication](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/chapters/dedication) The dedication is especially addressed to readers named Dorothy, referencing the protagonist. ### [Author's Note](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/chapters/author-s-note) Mentioned as a character readers want to hear more about. ### [Ozma of Oz](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/chapters/ozma-of-oz) The protagonist who is swept overboard and leads the rescue mission in Ev. ### [The Girl in the Chicken-Coop](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/chapters/i-the-girl-in-the-chicken-coop) The protagonist, a little Kansas girl traveling to Australia with Uncle Henry, who is swept overboard during a storm and ends up adrift on a chicken-coop. ### [The Yellow Hen](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/chapters/ii-the-yellow-hen) Awakens in the coop, talks with Billina, lands on shore, and finds a golden key. ### [Letters in the Sand](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/chapters/iii-letters-in-the-sand) Discovers the warning in the sand, picks lunch-boxes and dinner-pails from trees, and flees from the Wheelers to a rocky hill. ### [IV: Tiktok the Machine Man](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/chapters/iv-tiktok-the-machine-man) Discovers the hidden path and rock door, unlocks it with the golden key, and winds up Tiktok, making him her servant. ### [Dorothy Opens the Dinner-Pail](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/chapters/v-dorothy-opens-the-dinner-pail) Takes charge of the situation, rewinds Tiktok, eats her dinner, and learns about the Land of Ev and Oz. ### [The Heads of Langwidere](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/chapters/vi-the-heads-of-langwidere) Refuses to give up her head to Princess Langwidere and is imprisoned in the North Tower. ### [VII: Ozma of Oz to the Rescue](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/ozma_of_oz_se/chapters/vii-ozma-of-oz-to-the-rescue) Imprisoned in the tower by Princess Langwidere;
