First appearance: our baseball club and how it won the championship
As a supporting figure in Our Baseball Club and How It Won the Championship, Miss Anstress is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Dismisses the baseball excitement and rebuffs Rough and Ready's inquiry about a telegram.
Older sister to the baseball-mad Alice, Anstress moves in the domestic sphere of Judge Howell's house, where she has promised the little servant Jessie a day off to see the game. Unlike her sister's open fervor, she works through small kindnesses and quiet arrangements, a contrast that throws Alice's impatience into relief. Her presence grounds the Howell family scenes, reminding readers that the championship fever touches households as much as ball fields.
