## Snapshot

A respected judge who insists girls have no business learning baseball, yet finds himself reluctantly captivated by the championship chase his daughter Alice follows so ardently.

## Who they are

Judge Howell anchors Catalpa's respectable society, and his handsome house is a landmark the young ballplayers pass with a respectful tip of the cap. He dismisses Alice's baseball enthusiasm as unladylike, but at the big match he admits he is 'just beginning to become interested' and would hate to see the Catalpas beaten. His slow thaw matters because it measures how deeply the baseball fever has penetrated even the town's most dignified household.
