First appearance: our baseball club and how it won the championship
As a supporting figure in Our Baseball Club and How It Won the Championship, Ida Boardman is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Sits with Alice; points out Larry Boyne at the bat; expresses impatience at the scoreless innings.
Ida belongs to the cluster of young women in Catalpa whose enthusiasm for the game matches the players' own, and whose talk and gossip carry the season's stakes through the town. Her friendship with Alice places her at the edge of the romance and rivalry that swirl around Larry Boyne and the club. Even in the background, she represents the wider community whose hopes rise and fall with every match.
