# Social Class and Manners in Our American Cousin

> Theme guide for Our American Cousin by Tom Taylor.

The play contrasts the rigid, debt-ridden English aristocracy (Sir Edward, the Mountchessingtons) with the blunt, practical American Asa Trenchard, satirizing class pretension and the hypocrisy of 'good society' through characters like Mrs. Mountchessington and the servants' gossip.
