Othello's predecessor as governor of Cyprus, a soldier of gravity and restraint who is drawn into a brawl he tried to prevent.

## Who they are

Montano governed Cyprus before Othello and remains on the island as a respected elder statesman of the garrison. He listens to Iago's insinuations about Cassio's drinking with the caution of a man who values order, yet his concern for the general's trust proves well founded when he is wounded trying to stop Cassio's drunken violence. His injury forces Othello to demote Cassio, handing Iago the opening he has been waiting for.
