# Brandimart — Orlando Furioso character guide

> Brandimart in Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** faithful Brandimart, gentle Brandimart, bold Brandimart, Sir Brandimart

**First appearance:** 0003-canto-i

## Snapshot

Orlando's steadfast companion, a Christian knight whose loyalty and gentleness set him apart from the poem's proud and faithless warriors.

## Who they are

Brandimart appears throughout the poem as the friend Orlando can rely on when love has driven the count to madness and wandering. His constancy contrasts sharply with the betrayals and self-interest that surround him, and his marriage to Fiordiligi anchors one of the poem's few tender domestic threads. He matters because his devotion repeatedly pulls the scattered Christian cause back toward coherence.
