# Why does Oedipus accuse Creon?

> Oedipus Rex by Sophocles

## Answer

Oedipus accuses Creon of conspiracy because fear and pride outrun evidence. When Teiresias implicates Oedipus in Laius’s death, Oedipus assumes the blind prophet must be bribed. Creon is nearby in power, calm where Oedipus is fiery, and has just returned from Delphi — enough for suspicion in a king who cannot tolerate threat.

Creon’s defense is rational: he has no desire to trade easy influence for the burdens of throne. The chorus mediates; Jocasta intervenes. The quarrel shows Oedipus’s temper before the full truth arrives — the same decisiveness that saved Thebes now alienates allies. Students can link this scene to hubris and to later irony: Creon will survive to rule and, in Antigone, repeat rigid kingship in a different key.
