# Why does Oedipus refuse to return to Thebes?

> Oedipus at Colonus by Sophocles

## Answer

Oedipus refuses because Thebes cast him out and now wants him back only for strategic gain, not justice. Creon and others learn that the old king’s body will bless the land where he is buried; after years of wandering, Oedipus will not let the city that exiled him harvest his death as if nothing happened.

He also trusts Apollo’s guidance toward Colonus and Theseus’s hospitality rather than Creon’s pressure. Returning would mean forgiving abuse and abandoning the sacred role he is finally accepting. His refusal curses the sons who did not defend him and aligns Athens with divine favor. Classroom answers should mention both wounded pride and religious duty — Sophocles gives Oedipus moral clarity, not petty revenge alone.
