> Amédée Chevalier in O Pioneers! by Willa Cather.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Amédée, Poor Amédée

**First appearance:** 0006-part-ii-neighboring-fields

## Snapshot

Emil's sunny French neighbor and boyhood friend, whose easy happiness throws Emil's own hidden sorrow into sharp relief.

## Who they are

Amédée rides, wrestles, and jokes with Emil as he has since they were twelve, and his marriage to the pretty Angélique is a picture of uncomplicated joy. At the Catholic fair he submits cheerfully to his bride's teasing, unaware that his friend watches with envy and despair. His open, natural love becomes the measure against which Emil's impossible longing for Marie is silently weighed.
