Orphaned as an infant, Jehan was raised by Claude with a mother's anxious devotion, and the archdeacon's whole future was once staked on the boy's happiness. That tenderness curdled into indulgence: the pretty child grew into a dissolute student and troublemaker who trades on his brother's name. He matters because he is the human crack in Frollo's austerity, the proof that the archdeacon's heart was capable of love before obsession claimed it.
