Chapter 1
Storm
A cyclone strikes Stanton, terrifying Aunt Hager and Sandy. They take shelter in their home as the storm tears off their porch. Sandy worries about his mother Annjee, who is late returning from work. After the storm, they learn that Mrs. Gavitt's niece has died, and Aunt Hager helps comfort the grieving family. Sandy waits alone in the dark until his mother finally arrives and carries him home.
Chapter 2
Conversation
Sandy wakes up and plays with Buster and Willie-Mae. A letter arrives from Jimboy, causing excitement. Aunt Hager and Sister Whiteside share a meal and discuss family matters, including Harriett's future and Tempy's social climbing.
Chapter 3
Jimboy's Letter
Annjee receives a letter from Jimboy, who is returning home after injuring his back working on a railroad section gang. She reflects on their marriage, his restless nature, and her own desire to travel. Aunt Hager disapproves of Jimboy's return, while Sandy eagerly awaits his father's promised gift.
Chapter 4
Thursday Afternoon
Aunt Hager does the Reinharts' washing while Sandy and Jimmy Lane fetch the laundry. Harriett returns home from the country club, leading to a heated argument with Hager about her behavior, her defiance of church and respectability, and her desire for freedom. Despite Hager's pleas, Harriett leaves for a barbecue at Willow Grove with friends in a red auto.
Chapter 5
Guitar
In this chapter, Jimboy returns to Stanton and spends the evening playing guitar and singing with Harriett in the yard, while Annjee, his wife, feels neglected and jealous. The family and neighbors gather to listen to a mix of blues, ragtime, and spirituals, blending joy, tension, and cultural expression. The night ends with Jimboy reconciling with Annjee and the household settling into sleep.
