Politics and Revolution
The novel explores the chaos of political upheaval in Costaguana, where revolutions are driven by greed, power struggles, and ideological hypocrisy, affecting both the elite and the common people.
Identity and Reputation
Nostromo's sense of self is tied to his public reputation as a heroic figure, but his secret theft of the silver destroys his inner integrity, highlighting the conflict between external image and internal reality.
Imperialism and Material Interests
Foreign capital and companies, like the O.S.N. and the San Tome mine, impose economic control over Costaguana, prioritizing profit over human welfare and shaping the country's destiny.
Class and Social Hierarchy
The novel contrasts the aristocracy, the bourgeoisie, and the working class, with figures like Nostromo as a 'Man of the People' and the Goulds representing the elite, revealing tensions and dependencies across social strata.
Betrayal and Trust
Trust is repeatedly exploited and betrayed, from Nostromo's employers misjudging his character to his own sense of betrayal by the rich, leading to moral decay and isolation.
Love and Sacrifice
Romantic and familial love, such as Antonia's devotion to Decoud and Mrs. Gould's loyalty to her husband, are tested by political turmoil and personal ambition, often requiring sacrifice.
Fate and Superstition
Superstitious beliefs, like the curse of Azuera's gold and the ominous cry of the owl, intertwine with the characters' fates, suggesting an inescapable destiny tied to greed and violence.
Modernity vs. Tradition
The clash between old Spanish colonial ways and the encroaching forces of industrialization, railways, and foreign investment is depicted through the transformation of Sulaco and its people.
