Love and marriage
Henry Tilney teaches then courts Catherine — Love and Marriage survive General’s expulsion when truth about her dowry clears.
Henry Tilney is clergyman, brother to Eleanor, son of General — he mocks Catherine’s Gothic fancies lovingly and later defies his father to seek her hand. Love and Marriage in Northanger is comparatively straightforward once obstacles fall: General expels Catherine when he believes she is poor; Eleanor’s marriage to a viscount and truth about Catherine’s modest but real estate restore prospects.
The Role of Women appears in Eleanor’s quiet suffering and Catherine’s growth from heroine-of-novel to modest wife. Coming of Age completes when Catherine sees General’s tyranny without inventing murder. Use for how the novel ends and who Henry is.
