Concepts
Ideas that structure North of Boston by Robert Frost — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Isolation and Community
The book explores the tension between individual solitude and the need for human connection, as seen in poems like 'Mending Wall,' where neighbors debate the necessity of barriers, and 'The Death of the Hired Man,' where the hired man seeks refuge and belonging.
Work and Labor
Physical labor, particularly farming and manual work, is central to the characters' identities and struggles, as in 'After Apple-Picking,' which reflects on the exhaustion and meaning of harvest, and 'The Code,' which examines pride and misunderstanding in haying.
Home and Belonging
The concept of home is questioned and redefined, especially in 'The Death of the Hired Man,' where characters debate whether home is a place of obligation or something one doesn't have to deserve, and in 'The Housekeeper,' which depicts a dissolving household.
Tradition vs. Change
Characters grapple with inherited customs and modern shifts, as in 'Mending Wall,' where the speaker questions the old adage 'Good fences make good neighbours,' and in 'The Generations of Men,' where ancestral pride is both celebrated and mocked.
Death and Mortality
Death looms as a quiet presence, from the hired man's peaceful end in 'The Death of the Hired Man' to the self-seeker's negotiation over his lost legs, and in 'Home Burial,' where grief over a child's death fractures a marriage.
Nature and the Land
The natural world is both a source of sustenance and a force of indifference, as in 'The Mountain,' where the landscape dominates human life, and in 'Blueberries,' where wild fruit shapes community and economy.
Class and Economic Struggle
Economic hardship and class distinctions are evident in 'The Death of the Hired Man,' where Silas is dependent on others' charity, and in 'A Servant to Servants,' where a woman's endless domestic labor reflects her trapped circumstances.
Communication and Misunderstanding
Many poems highlight failed or strained communication, such as in 'Home Burial,' where a couple cannot bridge their grief, and in 'The Code,' where a farmer's casual remark is misinterpreted as criticism.
