Chapter 1
I: "Haste to the Wedding"

Chapter 2
II: Roses and Thorns
Margaret Hale travels home to Helstone with her father after her cousin Edith's wedding, reflecting on her mother's absence and the family's financial constraints. She observes her father's weary appearance and worries about the family's hidden troubles, particularly concerning her brother Frederick. At Helstone, Margaret finds her mother discontented with their isolated life and her father's lack of preferment. Margaret defends their simple life against her mother's social aspirations. As autumn progresses, Mr. Hale becomes increasingly anxious, waiting for the postman, while Margaret occupies herself with drawing. The chapter ends with the unexpected arrival of Henry Lennox.
Chapter 3
III: “The More Haste the Worse Speed”
Henry Lennox visits the Hale family at Helstone after Edith's wedding. He spends the day sketching with Margaret, and later proposes to her. Margaret refuses, feeling no romantic attachment. Lennox leaves, expressing lingering affection despite her disdain.
Chapter 4
IV: Doubts and Difficulties
Mr. Hale reveals to Margaret that he can no longer be a clergyman in the Church of England due to his religious doubts, and that the family must leave Helstone and move to Milton-Northern, where he plans to work as a private tutor. Margaret is shocked and distressed by the news, and agrees to break it to her mother.
Chapter 5
V: Decision
Margaret Hale takes charge of the family's affairs after her father's decision to leave Helstone due to his religious doubts. She manages the household packing, plans their move to Milton-Northern, and supports her ailing mother while grappling with the emotional weight of leaving their home and parishioners. The chapter highlights Margaret's transition from a sheltered life to one of heavy responsibility.
