Concepts
Ideas that structure Nordenholt’s Million by J. J. Connington — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Survival and Catastrophe
The book explores humanity's struggle for survival following a global ecological disaster caused by a blight that destroys plant life, forcing a small group to create a fortified Nitrogen Area to sustain civilization.
Authoritarianism and Despotism
Nordenholt's rule is depicted as a necessary but ruthless dictatorship, where he imposes harsh labor conditions, suppresses dissent, and sacrifices individual freedoms for the collective goal of survival, raising questions about the morality of absolute power.
Science and Technology
The narrative emphasizes the role of scientific innovation—such as atomic energy, nitrogen fixation, and mass production—as both a cause of the disaster (via the blight) and a solution for rebuilding society.
Human Nature and Brutality
The book examines the primal, brutish instincts underlying human behavior, as seen in the collapse of society, the desperation of starving masses, and Nordenholt's belief that civilization is built on a 'brute basis'.
Utopian Dreams vs. Reality
The protagonist and Elsa Huntingtower fantasize about a perfect future city called Fata Morgana, but their ideals clash with the harsh necessities of survival, leading to moral compromises and personal disillusionment.
Class and Labor Exploitation
The story critiques class dynamics, showing how the working masses are manipulated, coerced, and exploited through propaganda, forced labor, and deportation to maintain the elite's control over resources.
Religion and Fanaticism
The Reverend John P. Wester represents the dangerous rise of religious fanaticism, which Nordenholt sees as a threat to rational order, leading to conflict between emotional faith and pragmatic governance.
Love and Personal Sacrifice
The protagonist's romantic feelings for Elsa are intertwined with the larger struggle, as personal desires are subordinated to the collective mission, and emotional bonds are strained by the ethical costs of survival.
