# The Table and the Chair — Nonsense Books character guide

> The Table and the Chair in Nonsense Books by Edward Lear.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Chair

**First appearance:** 0058-the-table-and-the-chair

## Snapshot

A table with chilblains and a skeptical chair who talk their way out the door and toddle through town on a cheerful, bumpy adventure.

## Who they are

The Table complains of heat and chilblains and proposes a walk; the Chair objects that they cannot possibly walk, then relents when the Table points out they have equal legs. Off they toddle through the streets to the delight of onlookers, only to lose their way in an alley and hire a Ducky-quack, a Beetle, and a Mouse to guide them home. Their small expedition captures the book's gentlest theme: unlikely companions discovering that the world is larger and stranger than the parlor.
