# Elías — Noli Me Tangere character guide

> Elías in Noli Me Tangere by José Rizal.

**Role:** major

**First appearance:** 0030-xxiii-fishing

## Snapshot

A boatman with bruised arms and a hunted past, he saves Ibarra's life, warns him of a plot, and asks only that his own name be kept out of it.

## Who they are

Elías speaks to Ibarra in the church and again by the water with a gravity that fits neither pilot nor rustic, insisting that every man has enemies and that the honest provoke the most hate. He owes Ibarra a debt, but his warning is offered on Ibarra's account, not his own — he fears nothing from men. He is the story's shadow-double: the man who already knows how the colony punishes those who rise, and who chooses to protect the one who still hopes.
