Don Filipo hosts the town's freethinkers in his home, where Old Tasio lectures on purgatory and Don Filipo counters with scholastic Latin. As teniente-mayor he holds office without real power, caught between the gobernadorcillo's conservatism and his own convictions. He represents the fragile possibility of reform from within — a man of principle in a system designed to reward obedience, and his quiet courage in honoring Don Rafael's memory foreshadows the cost of such decency.
