# Don Alfonso Linares — Noli Me Tangere character guide

> Don Alfonso Linares in Noli Me Tangere by José Rizal.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Linares, Alfonso Linares

**First appearance:** 0049-xlii-the-espada-as

## Snapshot

A young Spanish lawyer newly arrived from the Peninsula, groomed by Doña Victorina to court María Clara and embody the colonial dream of pure-blooded prestige.

## Who they are

Linares enters Manila society as the acceptable suitor for María Clara, backed by the friars and the pretensions of his overbearing patroness. His polished manners and shallow accomplishments mask a man with no real fortune, no real convictions, and no real claim to the refinement he performs. He matters because his courtship turns marriage into a contest over bloodline and influence, exposing how the colony's futures are bargained away by those who mistake appearance for worth.
