Chapter 1
Dedication
The author dedicates the book to Francis Carr Beard, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, in remembrance of the time when the closing scenes of the story were written.
Chapter 2
No Name
The chapter introduces the Vanstone family and the central conflict of illegitimacy that drives the plot. After the sudden deaths of both parents, the daughters discover they are illegitimate and thus disinherited, setting the stage for Magdalen's quest for justice and revenge.

The First Scene
The chapter introduces the Vanstone family at their home, Combe-Raven, in Somersetshire, setting the stage for the events to come.
Chapter 4

Captain Kirke, newly returned to England, finds himself drawn to a poor street in London where he discovers Magdalen Vanstone, the woman who has haunted his thoughts, gravely ill and alone. He takes charge of her care, enlists the help of a trustworthy surgeon, Mr. Merrick, and a nurse, and begins the search for her relatives, while reflecting on the mysterious destiny that brought them together.
Chapter 5
II
Captain Wragge visits a recovering Magdalen and reveals that Mr. Kirke, the son of her father's old military friend, has been caring for her. He explains his own transformation into a successful pill merchant, and Magdalen grows increasingly eager to meet Kirke, who has been inquiring after her.
