Concepts
Ideas that structure Night and Day by Virginia Woolf — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Social Class and Family Legacy
The book explores the weight of distinguished family names, inherited status, and the expectations placed on characters like Katharine Hilbery, who is burdened by her grandfather's poetic legacy and the social rituals of her class.
Love vs. Marriage
The narrative contrasts romantic ideals of love with the practical, often loveless arrangements of marriage, as seen in Katharine's engagement to William Rodney and her internal conflict between duty and genuine passion.
Individual Identity and Autonomy
Characters struggle to define themselves outside of family roles and societal expectations, with Katharine seeking escape through mathematics and Ralph Denham grappling with his divided life between work and dreams.
Gender Roles and Women's Independence
The book examines the limited roles available to women, contrasting Katharine's domestic obligations with Mary Datchet's work in the suffrage movement, highlighting the tension between traditional femininity and emerging feminist ideals.
The Public vs. Private Self
Characters often perform social roles that conceal their inner lives, as when Katharine pours tea while her mind wanders, or when Ralph hides his romantic and imaginative nature behind a facade of efficiency.
Illusion and Reality
The narrative frequently contrasts the 'great make-believe game of English social life' with the harsh realities of poverty, failed dreams, and emotional truth, as seen in Lady Otway's pretense of wealth and Katharine's fantasies of love.
Work vs. Dreams
Ralph Denham's disciplined work life is set against his 'fierce and potent spirit' of dreams, reflecting a broader theme of how practical obligations suppress creative and romantic aspirations.
Generational Conflict
Younger characters like Henry Otway and Cyril Alardyce rebel against the conventions of their elders, while the Hilbery family struggles to reconcile the poet's Victorian legacy with modern sensibilities.
