Concepts
Ideas that structure Niels Lyhne by J. P. Jacobsen — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Dream vs. Reality
The central conflict of the novel, embodied by Niels Lyhne and his mother Bartholine, who live in a world of poetic dreams and romantic ideals, only to find themselves repeatedly disappointed by the harsh, prosaic realities of life, love, and death.
Loss of Faith and Meaning
Niels Lyhne's spiritual journey from a childlike faith in God to a defiant atheism after his prayers fail to save his aunt Edele, reflecting the broader 19th-century crisis of religious belief and the search for meaning in a godless universe.
The Artist and Creativity
Explores the nature of artistic ambition, the struggle to translate inner visions into genuine art, and the tension between the artist's idealized self and his actual limitations, as seen through Niels's poetic aspirations and Erik Refstrup's painterly struggles.
Love and Illusion
Romantic relationships in the novel are often built on self-deception, myth-making, and unfulfilled longing, such as Niels's chaste, theatrical affair with Mrs. Boye and Gerda Skinnerup's idealization of Niels, highlighting love as a fragile construct of the imagination.
Individualism vs. Conformity
Niels Lyhne's desire to be an exceptional, heroic individual clashes with the mundane expectations of society, family, and conventional life, leading to a sense of alienation and a recurring temptation to sink into the 'common herd.'
Death and Mortality
Death is a pervasive presence, from the stillborn brother to Edele's death and Niels's own eventual demise, serving as the ultimate test of faith, the destroyer of dreams, and the catalyst for Niels's rebellion against God and fate.
