## Who they are

Frank Cheeryble is generous, impulsive, and free of the calculation that marks so many young men in the novel, and his uncles clearly dote on him. He and Nicholas become fast friends, but their affection is complicated by the fact that both admire Madeline Bray, and Frank's honesty about his own feelings is tested by loyalty. He matters because he embodies the possibility of goodness without self-interest, and because his friendship with Nicholas gives the novel a model of male affection untainted by rivalry or greed.
