## Who they are

Fanny drifts through Dotheboys Hall in a fog of self-regard, convinced that Nicholas's polite smile means something more than it does. She drops her pen, knocks heads with him, and walks away marveling at his legs, all while her parents' brutality continues around her. Her deluded crush on Nicholas makes the school's grimness briefly comic and gives the Squeers household a second, sillier face.
