# Maud Milvain — New Grub Street character guide > Maud Milvain in New Grub Street by George Gissing. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Maud **First appearance:** 0000-i-a-man-of-his-day ## Snapshot Jasper's elder sister, languid and discontented in their bare London lodgings, she reads studiously and judges newcomers with a cautious, skeptical eye. ## Who they are Maud shares two rented rooms with her sister Dora, having exchanged a comfortable country home for the cramped economy of lodgers' London, and her face wears discontent more readily than sorrow. When Amy Reardon calls, Maud sits languidly and lets Dora carry the conversation, but her reserve masks a sharp awareness of social awkwardness and the precariousness of their position. Her skepticism about Amy and her dependence on Jasper's plans for their advancement make her a quiet barometer of the compromises that literary London demands of women without money. ## Relationships ### [Jasper Milvain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/new_grub_street_se/characters/jasper_milvain) _family_ Maud is Jasper's other sister, who often colludes with him in social schemes but is also subject to his casual manipulation. ### [Dora Milvain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/new_grub_street_se/characters/dora_milvain) _family_ Dora and Maud are sisters who support each other, though they often find themselves caught in Jasper's schemes. ### [Marian Yule](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/new_grub_street_se/characters/marian_yule) _friendship_ Marian and Maud are friends who share literary interests and a mutual understanding of their difficult family circumstances. ### [Jasper Milvain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/new_grub_street_se/characters/jasper_milvain) _family_ Maud is Jasper's other sister, who often colludes with him in social schemes but is also subject to his casual manipulation. ### [Jasper Milvain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/new_grub_street_se/characters/jasper_milvain) _family_ Maud is Jasper's other sister, who often colludes with him in social schemes but is also subject to his casual manipulation. ### [Marian Yule](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/new_grub_street_se/characters/marian_yule) _friendship_ Marian and Maud are friends who share literary interests and a mutual understanding of their difficult family circumstances. ### [Dora Milvain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/new_grub_street_se/characters/dora_milvain) _family_ Dora and Maud are sisters who support each other, though they often find themselves caught in Jasper's schemes. ## In the story ### [A Man of His Day](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/new_grub_street_se/chapters/i-a-man-of-his-day) Clashes with Jasper over his financial dependence and resents being asked to write religious stories for money. ### [The House of Yule](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/new_grub_street_se/chapters/ii-the-house-of-yule) Maud is curious about Marian Yule and accompanies Jasper and Dora to the Yule house. ### [Holiday](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/new_grub_street_se/chapters/iii-holiday) Maud is Jasper's other sister, also reserved.
