Maud shares two rented rooms with her sister Dora, having exchanged a comfortable country home for the cramped economy of lodgers' London, and her face wears discontent more readily than sorrow. When Amy Reardon calls, Maud sits languidly and lets Dora carry the conversation, but her reserve masks a sharp awareness of social awkwardness and the precariousness of their position. Her skepticism about Amy and her dependence on Jasper's plans for their advancement make her a quiet barometer of the compromises that literary London demands of women without money.
