Wendover trails Sir Clinton through the investigation as friend, foil, and occasional conscience, grumbling at the beach-digging pantomime and pressing for what his companion actually expects to find. He watches the chief constable's courtship of Mme. Laurent-Desrousseaux with open suspicion, wondering what Clinton sees in 'that vamp.' His distrust of smooth explanations makes him a useful barometer for readers weighing which witnesses can be believed.
