# Bankim Chandra — My Reminiscences character guide

> Bankim Chandra in My Reminiscences by Rabindranath Tagore.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Bankim, Bankim Babu, Babu

**First appearance:** 0041-part-vii-xl-bankim-chandra

## Snapshot

The great Bengali novelist whose work the narrator admires, whose conversation he treasures, and with whom he once fell into a heated public quarrel.

## Who they are

He is the presiding literary figure of the age, the man who introduces Pandit Sashadhar to the public and whose prose flows as gaily as the best talk. The narrator, emerging from his corner into controversy, spars with him in the pages of the Prachar and Bharati, and the antagonism ends only when Bankim Babu writes a letter of consummate generosity. He matters because he represents both the heights the narrator aspires to and the possibility of generous rivalry among writers.
