**First appearance:** 0007-v-my-college-days

## Snapshot

A Chinese student educated in America who wins over Shanghai's merchant class with a single well-translated epitaph.

## Who they are

Wong Shing drifts through Shanghai's commercial world after his American education, translating to survive and to widen his circle among the educated and mercantile classes. When a prominent foreign firm needs an epitaph rendered into English, his version is chosen over the British Consulate's—and suddenly his name carries weight among Chinese merchants. His story shows how one man's bilingual skill can open doors that politics alone cannot.
