## Snapshot

The cool-tempered, self-made headmaster of the Morrison School who asked which boys would follow him to America — and changed Yung Wing's life.

## Who they are

Mr. Brown runs the Morrison School in Hong Kong with a pedagogue's instinct for managing boys and a gift for making hard subjects plain. When failing health forces his return to America in 1846, he springs a surprise on the school: he will take a few old pupils home to finish their education. His calm, sympathetic manner and his open invitation — answered first by Yung Wing rising to his feet — set the entire arc of the book in motion.
