# Bruin — My First Summer in the Sierra character guide

> Bruin in My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** neighbor Bruin

**First appearance:** 0003-ii-in-camp-on-the-north-fork-of-the-merced

## Snapshot

The resident bear of the high country, a neighbor whose sudden appearances test Carlo's nerve and remind the camp that the Sierra belongs to its wilder tenants.

## Who they are

Bruin is less a villain than a fellow mountaineer — a brown bear startled from a manzanita thicket who runs off tumbling over brush, evidently judging Muir the dangerous one. The encounter exposes the camp's fragile footing: Carlo's ears flatten, Muir's ecstasy collapses into caution, and the sheep remain somewhere below, vulnerable. Bruin matters because he embodies the summer's central negotiation — how much of this country can be walked through, and how much simply has to be shared.
