Everard Grey is the orphan of aristocratic English parents, rescued and educated by Grannie, now one of Sydney's most promising barristers and a Christmas fixture at Caddagat. Urbane, witty, and a little theatrical, he is the first person who takes Sybylla's mind seriously rather than her marriage prospects, and his visits open a window onto the wider, cleverer world she craves. He matters because he shows her what a life of ideas might look like—and because he is not, quite, an answer to it.
