# Mrs. Harling — My Ántonia character guide

> Mrs. Harling in My Ántonia by Willa Cather.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0025-i

## Snapshot

The brisk, warm-hearted matriarch next door who employs Ántonia, sets the moral tone of Black Hawk, and keeps a watchful eye on Jim.

## Who they are

Mrs. Harling runs a lively household of musical, headstrong children and hires Ántonia as a 'hired girl' — a role that places the immigrant girl at the center of Black Hawk's social world. She restrains Jim's wilder boyhood impulses and later becomes his confidante when he wants to understand Ántonia's broken engagement. Practical, curious, and generous, she is the novel's clearest portrait of how a good woman shapes a town.
