## Who they are

Ántonia Cuzak is the woman Jim has carried in memory for twenty years, and the reason he finally breaks his long journey west. Married to a kind but unambitious Bohemian cousin of Anton Jelinek, she has raised ten or eleven children in poverty that others read as failure and she seems to wear as plenty. Her reunion with Jim tests whether his early illusions can survive contact with the real, aging, enduring woman — and whether memory is a truer reality than anything that comes after.
