Concepts
Ideas that structure Mutual Aid by Peter Kropotkin — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Mutual Aid as a Factor of Evolution
The central thesis of the book, arguing that cooperation and mutual support among individuals of the same species are as important as, if not more important than, competition in driving progressive evolution, both in the animal world and human societies.
Critique of Social Darwinism
A sustained challenge to the narrow interpretation of Darwin's 'struggle for existence' as a brutal, individualistic competition, rejecting the Hobbesian view of nature and society as a 'war of each against all' and emphasizing the role of sociability.
Historical Development of Social Institutions
Traces the evolution of human social organization from primitive clans and tribes through barbarian village communities to medieval cities and guilds, showing how mutual aid was institutionalized in each phase.
State vs. Communal Organization
Examines the conflict between the centralized, authoritarian State, which systematically destroyed communal institutions like village communities and guilds, and the organic, federative structures based on mutual support that arose from the masses.
Individualism vs. Cooperation
Explores the tension between the 'self-assertion of the individual' (a progressive but often glorified force) and the mutual-aid tendency, arguing that both currents exist but that cooperation has been historically neglected and is essential for ethical and social progress.
Sociability in Nature
Presents extensive evidence from the animal kingdom—from ants and bees to birds and mammals—demonstrating that sociability, mutual protection, and cooperative hunting are widespread natural laws that enhance survival and intelligence.
Resilience of Mutual Aid Institutions
Highlights how, despite centuries of suppression by the State and the rise of individualism, mutual-aid practices and institutions (e.g., trade unions, cooperatives, village customs) persistently re-emerge and remain vital to daily life and social cohesion.
