Concepts
Ideas that structure Murder by the Clock by Rufus King — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Appearance vs. Reality
The narrative constantly blurs the line between what seems to be true and what is actually happening, from Mrs. Endicott's staged alibi to the false assumption that Endicott is dead when he is merely in a cataleptic state.
Marriage and Deception
The Endicotts' marriage is built on lies, manipulation, and unspoken resentments, with Mrs. Endicott admitting she and her husband never had a direct question or answer between them, and her using forgery to control his affections.
Obsession and Control
Mrs. Endicott's obsessive need to control her husband and her own fate drives her actions, including her willingness to fake a suicide attempt and her cold, calculated responses to the investigation, while Roberts's obsessive hatred of Mrs. Endicott mirrors this theme.
Death and the Afterlife
Mrs. Endicott's fascination with death and the beyond is a recurring motif, as she speaks of seeking 'mysteries in that life which beckons from beyond life' and attempts suicide, while the narrative repeatedly plays with the idea of death being reversible or misunderstood.
Guilt and Innocence
The investigation revolves around determining who is guilty, but the characters' own admissions—like Mrs. Endicott's confession of intent to kill—complicate the notion of innocence, and the police themselves are unsure whether the true criminal is still at large.
The Psychology of Murder
The book delves into the psychological motivations behind murder, including jealousy, fear, and a desire for power, as seen in Mrs. Endicott's complex relationship with her husband and Roberts's near-homicidal rage.
Deception of the Senses
The plot relies on sensory misdirection—such as the coldness of a body that isn't dead, the sound of shots that aren't heard, and the use of dust as a disguise—to keep both the characters and the reader uncertain about what truly happened.
