# How does Mr. Standfast develop the theme of Patriotism and Duty?

> Mr. Standfast by John Buchan

## Answer

Mr. Standfast by John Buchan develops Patriotism and Duty across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The narrative explores different forms of patriotism, from Richard Hannay's active military service to the covert intelligence work of Blenkiron and Mary Lamington, contrasting genuine sacrifice with the intellectual pacifism and treason of characters like Ivery.

Hannay reluctantly leaves the front to serve his country in a dangerous intelligence role.

Hannay grapples with the shame of posing as a pacifist but ultimately accepts the mission out of loyalty to his country and friends.
