## Snapshot

The first Mrs. Incoul, a society-loving wife whose death from pneumonia leaves her husband alone in a house built for company.

## Who they are

She liked to fill the Madison Avenue palace with guests and entertainments, while her husband cared for society as much as for negro minstrels yet insisted she give parties anyway. In the winter after their fifteenth anniversary she caught a chill, took to her bed, and died forty-eight hours later, and the world promptly said Incoul would not marry again. Her death is the silence against which his second marriage and all its suspicions acquire their weight.
