Concepts
Ideas that structure Moribund Society and Anarchy by Jean Grave — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Negation of Authority
The book defines anarchy as the negation of authority, arguing that authority exists only to defend oppressive institutions like the family, religion, and property, and must be dismantled for human liberation.
Critique of Private Property
Private property is identified as the root of social ills, enabling exploitation, class division, and the concentration of power, and the book calls for its abolition as the basis for a just society.
Individualism and Solidarity
The text reconciles individual freedom with communal solidarity, arguing that true individuality can only flourish in a society based on mutual aid and the absence of coercion.
Militarism and the State
Militarism is portrayed as a tool of the ruling class to suppress dissent and protect capital, with the army serving as an instrument of oppression rather than defense of the people.
Social Revolution
The book advocates for a complete overthrow of existing social structures, not mere reform, arguing that revolution is inevitable and necessary to eliminate exploitation and establish freedom.
Propaganda by Deed
The text emphasizes the importance of direct action and living according to anarchist principles as a means of inspiring change, rather than relying on electoral politics or parliamentary methods.
Critique of Reformism
Gradual reforms are dismissed as illusions that perpetuate the status quo, with the book arguing that only the destruction of authority and property can address the root causes of suffering.
Human Nature and Society
The book contends that human selfishness and conflict are products of a corrupt social environment, not innate flaws, and that a just society would foster cooperation and solidarity.
