**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Jean Grave—sturdy , patient , indomitable Jean Grave

**First appearance:** 0001-moribund-society-and-anarchy

## Snapshot

The sturdy, patient, indomitable agitator whose voice and reputation shadow the text, urging readers to study anarchist ideas rather than delegate their own liberation.

## Who they are

Grave stands behind the book as both authorial presence and exemplar—the militant who asks nothing for himself from the ideas he spreads. His insistence that no one should be commissioned to "direct" you, and that the individual is the sole judge of his needs, defines the ethical spine of the argument. He matters because he embodies the book's wager: that conviction strong enough to make people fight and suffer without reward is itself the proof of an idea's worth.
