# Father Absinthe — Monsieur Lecoq character guide

> Father Absinthe in Monsieur Lecoq by Émile Gaboriau.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Worthy Father Absinthe

**First appearance:** 0000-monsieur-lecoq

## Snapshot

A weary, loyal veteran detective who trails young Lecoq through the night, too exhausted to question orders yet too dutiful to quit.

## Who they are

Father Absinthe is the old police officer paired with the brilliant but untested Lecoq, a man whose limbs fail him while his loyalty does not. He is less a thinker than a follower, a luckless cab-horse who travels on until he drops, and his quiet unease sharpens the reader's sense of how badly the investigation is going. When Lecoq's confidence collapses, it is Absinthe's plodding presence that keeps the pair moving toward the one man who might save them.
