Chapter 1
Monsieur Lecoq

Chapter 3
I
Father Chupin arrives in Sairmeuse with news that the Duc de Sairmeuse has returned to reclaim his former estates, stirring fear and anger among the peasants who had purchased the land. Chanlouineau and others express defiance, while Chupin manipulates their emotions, targeting Lacheneur as the likely victim. The chapter ends with the duke's carriage arriving and the Chupin family cheering for him.
Chapter 4
II
M. Lacheneur, having received a devastating message from Chupin, walks in a daze up the avenue to the Château de Sairmeuse, accompanied by his daughter Marie-Anne. The narrative flashes back to his youth as a poor ploughboy for the Sairmeuse family, his love for Martha Barrois, and his rise during the Revolution, when he purchased the confiscated Sairmeuse estate for a fraction of its value. In the present, a fierce moral struggle unfolds between Lacheneur and Marie-Anne: she insists on restoring the property to the returning Duc de Sairmeuse, while he resists, fearing poverty and disgrace. Ultimately, Marie-Anne's resolve wins, and Lacheneur agrees to relinquish the château. Their conversation is interrupted by Maurice d'Escorval, who brings news of the duke's arrival, and Marie-Anne hints at a future test of Maurice's heart.
Chapter 5
III
The Duc de Sairmeuse and his son Martial arrive in Sairmeuse, observing changes in the village and encountering the Abbé Midon, whose austere and principled character contrasts with the duke's entitled expectations. The chapter reveals the duke's background, his unrepentant royalist views, and the tension between the returning nobility and the local priest.
