A powerful and witty Parisian aristocrat whose salon and counsel shape the ambitions of the poet Canalis.

## Who they are

The Duchesse de Chaulieu is a grande dame of the Faubourg Saint-Germain, a woman of influence whose favor can make or break a literary reputation. She takes an interest in Canalis, the celebrated poet, and her advice and connections form part of the Parisian world that Modeste dreams of from her provincial home. Her presence in the novel's middle arc introduces the tension between Modeste's romantic ideals and the calculating realities of Parisian ambition.
