## Who they are

Vincen is the barefoot boy at the edge of every harvest gathering, too proud to beg and too poor to be considered a suitor. His devotion to Mirèio is absolute and reckless — the kind that ruins a man before it ever wins him anything. He matters because he is the poem's test of whether love can survive the rigid arithmetic of Provençal class and dowry.
