## Who they are

Ourrias belongs to the rough Camargue world of cattle and open range, a man who expects to take what he wants and resents being refused. He pursues Mirèio as a possession to be won, not a person to be understood, and his jealousy of anyone she favors runs hot. He embodies the danger lurking beneath the poem's pastoral surface — the suitor whose frustration can turn violent when love is denied.
